MUMBAI: For many years now, the concept of a Diwali release has gained prominence in Bollywood. Year on year, releases during the festive season of lights have gotten bigger and better.
Here’s a look at the Diwali releases of the last 10 years, and how they fared at the box office:
2013: This year’s Diwali release is threequel to Hrithik Roshan’s superhero series ‘Krrish 3’. If the response to the trailer (released in August), the advance box office buzz and the fact that it’s holiday season – is anything to go by, we can be assured the film will pack a bomb at the box office.
Last year SRK’s JTHJ and Ajay Devgn’s SOS had together collected close to Rs 250 million (Rs 25 crores) net at the ticketing counter. Keeping this as the benchmark for this Diwali, one can safely anticipate that ‘Krrish 3’ will surpass the figure.
Add to that the fact that ‘Krrish 3’s tickets are going to be pricier than this year’s Eid release – ‘Chennai Express’ which collected a phenomenal Rs 330 million (Rs 33 crore) net at the box office on Day 1!
