People all over India expressed their disappointment rage and disapproval when government made a decision and banned the BBC documentary based on December 16’s Delhi gang rape, named ‘India’s Daughter’. The film was recently premiered in US with Frieda Pinto and Meryl Streep in audience joining hands to pay tribute to the 23-year-old late Nirbhaya.
Oscar winner Meryl Streep talked to a large audience at the Baruch College of the City University of New York where the premiere was held. Paying her dues to India’s Daughter she stated, “What is worse than brutality that dehumanises women? Tolerance and indifference towards it, acceptance that this is just the way things are. What is worse than rape, violence, cruelty? Tolerance for it. That’s worse. For weeks after her death, she was nameless, she was known as India’s daughter. Tonight, she is our daughter too.”
Participants of the event lit candles on the stage and mourned the loss of India’s daughter and pledged together to stand against violence on women around the world. Actress Frieda Pinto spoke few words too, “The shame is not in admitting the existence of such violence, the shame is in the crime and in not speaking out.”
Recently Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma spoke up on the band over the BBC documentary. The actress said that even though she hasn’t watched British filmmaker Leslee Udwin‘s documentary ‘India’s Daughter’, she thinks the audiences in India are mature enough to decide on their own, what they want to watch or what they don’t.
