No Longer A Slumdog, Birthday Boy Dev Patel Is Now A Millionaire!

012[tps_footer]The handsome and some would say, incredibly lucky, Dev Patel is an Indian-born International movie star. The British-Asian actor was picked from among millions of young boys, and given the chance to play the titular role in Danny Boyle’s Oscar winning film, Slumdog Millionaire.

Dev was born in London, on 23 April, 1990, to Gujarati parents. While in school, the young Dev Patel leaned towards theatre, and was cast in the school’s play, The Twelfth Night. Since then, the acting bug bit him severely, and Dev went to high school, and received an A+ in Drama, in his GCSE exams.

Alongside acting, while in school, martial arts was one of Dev’s passions. He competed in several national and international championships, often placing. This perhaps led him to have the motivation and dedication required to become an actor.

In 2007, Dev landed a role on British TV series Skins, after auditioning. This was his first serious acting experience, and Dev fondly remembers that he had no clue what to do on the first day of shoot.

Then, Dev Patel made history, when he was cast as the slum-dweller Jamal Malik, in Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Q & A by Vikas Swarup. Out of the hundreds and thousands who auditioned for this role, Dev was considered most suitable, as he looked real and totally “non filmy”.

Dev put in a lot of hard work for his first film, learning the ropes of how a slum functions, and spending time working in a call centre and at a local restaurant, doing the dishes. Boyle said that Dev literally earned his part in the film.

The film, of course, went on to become a huge success, thus cementing Dev’s Hollywood career, and also bringing him the love of his life. Dev began dating Freida Pinto on the sets of Slumdog Millionaire, and the two have been going strong ever since.

Since then, the unassuming, and very witty Dev has appeared in Hollywood hits like The Last Airbender, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, About Cherry, and the TV series, The Newsroom. His upcoming projects include Child 44, Chappie and the sequel of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.[/tps_footer]
