Miss Universe 2015: Colombia's Paulina Vega Crowned The Title

On January 25, 2015, Sunday, Miami crowned Paulina Vega, a 22 years old student of Business Administration from Columbia, as Ms. Universe. In the past 60 years of the Ms. Universe pageant, this is the first time that Columbia took the trophy! The country though had had four runners-up since 1992.

Paulina had been competing with finalists from US, Jamaica, Netherlands and Ukraine in the final round. The current Ms. Universe is however not at all new to pageants and performances. Her grandmother, Elvira Castillo, represented the country in the same competition in 1953 and her grandfather is legendary tenor Gaston Vega. Having won the Miss Universe title, Vega will receive an undisclosed salary, a luxury apartment in New York, a wardrobe and tons of beauty products, and also a one-year scholarship from the New York Film Academy.

Post the historic win of Ms. Columbia, twitter has been ablaze with its disappointment as Ms. Jamaica, Kaci Fennel, a 22 years old model, was declared the fourth runner up! People have voiced their contempt saying that Kaci lost out on racial grounds because of short hair or dark skin or that she belonged to a smaller country. Controversy also fueled last week when Ms. Lebanon was seen in a photograph with Ms. Israel, since the two countries had been at war since long.
