The 71st Golden Globe Awards honoring the best in film and American television of 2013 will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 12, 2014, by NBC.
Woody Allen was announced as the Cecil B. DeMille Award Honoree for his the lifetime achievements on September 13, 2013. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting these prestigious awards fro the second time in a row.
Since the Globes separate drama from comedy and musicals, the toughest race this year will be in comedy/musicals category.
In the Drama Category, the contenders are: 12 Years A Slave, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Philomena and Rush. Each of these, except Gravity is based on a true story.
In the Comedy or Musicals, the contenders are: American Hustle, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street. Now, because there were so many great films in this category, this year, it is going to be trickier than usual. No one film will be sweeping the all-important predictors, the critic’s awards.
Coming to the Actors in a Motion Picture (Drama) category, the contenders are: Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, Idris Elba for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips, Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club and Robert Redford for All Is Lost.
Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) include: Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks and Kate Winslet for Labor Day. Unlike most of the other categories this year, this one has a clear forerunner in Blanchett, whose bravura performance in Woody Allen’s film has won her accolades from the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle.
All said and done, the we are just twenty four hours away from unraveling the names of the winner. There is a lot of speculation as well as excitement.
The red carpet is being rolled out and the award ceremony is about to commence.
Our best wishes to all the nominees to The 71st Golden Globe Awards. May the best one win.
