Cars racing ahead

Animated movie Cars has raced to the top of the UK and Ireland box office chart, sinking nearest rival Pirates of The Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest.

The Pixar film, which features the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman and Bonnie Hunt, raked in £2.7 million ($4.8 million) last weekend, ahead of Pirates’ swashbuckling £2.6 million ($4.7 million) bounty. Together, the movie pair made more than the rest of the box office top ten put together.

Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston’s The Break-up dropped down a place to number three, while the Man Of Steel could do nothing to stop Superman Returns slipping to four. Storm Breaker rounds out the UK top five.
