LOS ANGELES: Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal will take over from Antonio Banderas as Zorro in the next movie about the mighty masked swordsman, Variety said on its Web site.

Garcia Bernal will star in the 20th Century Fox movie "Zorro Reborn" that will take the legend of the swashbuckling character another step further, but this time in futuristic surroundings far from California or Mexico.

The new Zorro will be a masked man lying in wait to wreak vengeance.

A director has not yet been named for "Zorro Reborn", which has a screenplay written by Glenn Gers, scribe of "Mad Money in 2008, together with Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, scriptwriters of the "Harker" vampire film to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

The last Zorro movie was "The Legend of Zorro" in 2005 with Antonio Banderas, who also starred in the 1998 production "The Mask of Zorro".

Meanwhile Sony Pictures Studios is working on its own Zorro project based on the 2005 novel "Zorro" by Chilean author Isabel Allende, which gives readers a prequel to all the swordsman’s later adventures.
