Toronto International Film Festival selects Dolby as D-Cinema & 3D provider

MUMBAI: Dolby Laboratories, Inc. is the exclusive digital cinema server and 3D provider of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The festival will be conducted 10 – 19 September at venues throughout Toronto, Canada.

Dolby’s Production Services team has installed Dolby Digital Cinema and Dolby 3D, and has also calibrated the sound and image of all participating festival venues. In addition, Dolby support staff will be onsite during the festival to ensure that audiences get the best possible experience, and filmmakers can accurately share their creative vision whether they use film or digital cinema, in 2D or 3D.

This year, Dolby and TIFF will bring Dolby Digital Cinema to all of TIFF’s premiere gala, special presentations, and Midnight Madness screenings. For the first time, TIFF will be outfitted with Dolby 3D when it presents the North American premiere of Joe Dante’s The Hole.

"The Toronto International Film Festival prides itself on delivering filmmakers the highest quality and latest cinema innovations. The addition of Dolby 3D brings a new dimension to the festival, and I know audiences will be enthralled by the premium viewing experience the Dolby 3D solution provides," said TIFF technical manager Andrei Gravelle.

In addition, TIFF will outfit four festival venues with Dolby Digital Cinema equipment. Dolby’s New York–based Production Services team is creating digital cinema packages for a number of films to be shown digitally for the first time in a fully equipped Dolby Digital Cinema environment.

"Working closely with the Toronto International Film Festival over the past two decades, Dolby has seen the festival evolve into one of the premier industry events in the world. Last year, Dolby assisted the Toronto International Film Festival with the digital cinema transition, and it was a huge success. I have no doubt that the addition of Dolby 3D will have the same effect, and will bring audiences and filmmakers the quality they have come expect from Dolby," said Dolby Laboratories senior director, production services Bill Allen.
