MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ new comedy The Hangover took the top spot at the UK box office this weekend. This is the biggest opening 15 certificate film in the UK to date this year taking in £2,749,005 for the weekend and £3,193,366 including Thursday’s previews.
The film has opened to an even stronger result than some of the funniest films of the last five years including Tropic Thunder (£2,501,412), Wedding Crashers (£2,236,844) and Knocked Up (£1,527,728).
On the heels of critical and audience raves and a multi-targeted marketing campaign, The Hangover earned $44,979,000 in its US opening weekend, making it the third-highest opening of an R-rated comedy ever. It sustained the US #1 position week on week making an estimated $33.4 million down 26 per cent for a current cumulative box office of $105 million. For Warner Bros. it is the studio’s sixth film to open at number one in 2009 to date.
Warner Bros. Entertainment UK president and managing director Josh Berger said, "Following on from the US success last weekend, we are delighted that the UK audiences have embraced The Hangover so enthusiastically. We knew The Hangover was that rare gem of a comedy that plays to audiences of virtually every demographic. And it did. Based on the overwhelmingly positive audience response so far, we anticipate that the excitement will continue to build through the summer as moviegoers turn out to get The Hangover."
The movie is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Jeffrey Tambor.
