Mumbai’s Natraj Studio to be demolished

MUMBAI: Natraj Studio, situated near the Western Express Highway at Andheri in Mumbai will soon make way for a shopping mall.

The studio, founded five decades ago and considered a landmark in Bollywood will now become history. Says a reliable source from the studio, on condition of anonymity, “Two stages that stand on the two-acre plot have already been razed. The third stage is being brought down and will soon bite the dust. The last shooting held earlier this month was producer-director Suneel Darshan’s Shakalaka Boom Boom starring Bobby Deol and Upen Patel. A song and some scenes for the film were canned on a massive set for the film. Builder Boman Irani, has acquired the premises, it is learnt.”

Natraj Studio was owned by veteran filmmakers like Dr Ramanand Sagar, F C Mehra and Atmaram, all of whom had offices in the studio premises at one time. The premises even housed the Natraj canteen, the well known caterers for film shootings.

A part of the studio was sold 14 years ago, sources say.
