MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan’s latest film ‘Chennai Express’ released on Eid, 9 August, and has since then broken records like a train would break signals.
The major record is that ‘Chennai Express’ has now become the highest grossing Shah Rukh Khan starrer in just five days as it beat the business of ‘Ra.One’.
But records were set even before the release of the film. For instance, ‘Chennai Express’ released on 670 screens abroad, which by itself is unprecedented for a Hindi film.
Once the paid previews started, it collected way more than what ‘3 Idiots’ had.
Another record was broken on Day 1 – 9 August – when ‘Chennai Express’ collected Rs 330 million (Rs 33 crore) net. It had broken ‘Ek Tha Tiger’s record of Rs 320 million (Rs 32 crore) from last year’s Eid. (Read story here)
Then three days into release, ‘Chennai Express’ reached 100 crores – Rs. 100.25 crore, to be precise – the fastest any film has reached that figure. (Read story here)
If you thought ‘Chennai Express’ has been gathering passengers only in India, then you’re mistaken. The 670 screens abroad have come to use with the film earning the highest opening day for a Hindi film in the Gulf as well as the UK. The film is also doing well in the US and Pakistan. On Monday the film earned Rs 12.41 crore net and on Tuesday Rs 11.36 crore net, thus taking its overall total so far to Rs 124.02 crore net.
The buzz around the cost of production of the film is said to be around Rs 50 crore, while around Rs 30 crore was the budget for advertising. Rohit Shetty takes home a fee of approximately Rs 15 crore and then there is Shah Rukh Khan too. Not to forget that Shah Rukh Khan will get a share of the profits. But with such a mammoth budget, most films would think twice to break even. ‘Chennai Express’ doesn’t look like it is having such issues.
Of course, now it is to be seen whether it will break the record of ‘3 Idiots’ of being the highest Hindi film grosser of all time. The biggest challenge arrives on 15 August when ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’ releases. Screens will be come lesser, crowds may shift to the Akshay Kumar-starrer. Will Shah Rukh Khan sway his audience back to him?
