Box Office: Rocket Singh nets Rs 102 million in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Yash Raj Film’s latest offering Rocket Singh – Salesman of The Year has done net business of approximately Rs 102 million (Rs 10.25 crore) in India in its opening weekend. While Friday saw occupancy of around 30 – 40 per cent at multiplexes, the film did pick up in the evening and night shows over the weekend. However, the film’s opening business is below expectations.

This was one of the most anticipated films of 2009, directed by Chak De! India director, Shimit Amin and written by Jaideep Sahni. The film depicts how a youth, who fails to make it through to the mainstream engineering or medical field, excels in the sales arena. Rocket Singh stars Ranbir Kapoor, who plays the character of a Sikh youth, Harpreet Singh Bedi.

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Fun Cinema COO Vishal Kapur said, "The opening of the film has been very average with around 30% occupancy. It’s a kind of movie that will appeal to a certain cliental. But the people who have watched the film have liked it so we are hopeful that the film will pick up."

Cinemax India senior vice president Devang Sampat added, "The opening of the film has not been as great as expected from a Shimit Amin film, this could also be due to the ongoing T20 matches. The opening was a bit low at around 40% occupancy but it has picked up and the night shows should do well. Most of the people are watching the film because of Ranbir Kapoor."
