Box Office: Salman Khan’s Jai Ho Fails To Beat Dhoom 3

Jai Ho poster 02Salman Khan’s Jai Ho has been a slow starter and failed to beat the record of Dhoom 3 on its opening day. Jai Ho is Salman Khan’s release after a long wait of more than a year. His last release was Dabbang 2 on December 21, 2012.

However, it seems the wait was not worth it. Jai Ho has managed to collect approximately Rs 170.4 million (17.04 crore) nett on day one, Friday 24, 2014. On the other hand, Dhoom 3 (Hindi version) had managed to collect collected Rs 334.2 million (33.4 crore) nett approximately on its opening day.

Jai Ho’s opening day collection is Salman’s lowest opening since Dabangg and is lower even compared to Chennai Express, Bodyguard and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Jai Ho was great at single screens but poor at multiplexes. It seems multiplex audiences are not in the mood for more masala movies and that is reflecting in the performance of Jai Ho.

Jai Ho, which released in around five thousand screens in the domestic market was one of the most awaited films of 2104. His last release was Dabbang 2 on December 21, 2012. Prior to that was Yash Raj Films Ek Tha Tiger where he was paired opposite Katrina Kaif and Kabir Khan directed the film.

The impact of Jai Ho‘s poor opening may affect Eros International way more than Sohail Khan. The latter in fact has already recovered the cost of production of the movie when he sold it to Eros.  The deal includes the all the rights of the movie including distribution, satellite, music and digital.

If one looks at day one figures of Jai Ho then its not that bad but there were more expectations from a Salman Khan movie and may face losses.

All said and done, now all hopes are now pinned on the collections on Saturday and Sunday, when maximum people are expected to watch the film. However, the golden figure of Rs 200 crore box office collections seems like a faraway dream for co-producers Sohail Khan and Eros International. We feel that the film shall enter the 100 crore club in the first week.

Jai Ho‘s run at the box office also depends on what kind of competition it faces from other films. Ready for releases are Abhay Deol‘s One By Two that releases on January 31, 2014, Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra’s Hasee Toh Phasee on Feburaty 07, 2104 and Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh starrer Gunday on February 14, 2014.
