  • Salman Khan Reasons The Success Of Prabhas’ Baahubali, And He Nails It!

Salman Khan Reasons The Success Of Prabhas’ Baahubali, And He Nails It!

Salman Khan explains the reason of the success of films like Baahubali.

The Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has become a guarantee of blockbuster movies in the Indian film industry. With his films like ‘Wanted,’ ‘Ready,’ ‘Dabangg,’ ‘Bodyguard,’ ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and his latest release ‘Sultan,’ the actor has given some of the biggest superhits of the industry.

But breaking all his records, in fact not only his, but all the Bollywood records, it was the south superstar Prabhas’ Baahubali 2 which scaled the box-office so high, that it has now set another level of benchmark for the B-town films.

But Salman Khan has his own opinion on the massive success of the film. In a conversation with DNA After Hrs, the actor says, ”I will tell you why numbers have become such a big thing. The most amazing thing about Baahubali’s success is that the Hindi audiences are so accepting. They have made a Telugu film so large, even though they do not know south heroes apart from three or four of them.”

Talking about the loyalty of the South Indian audience towards their stars, he says, ”South audiences know us there; yet, our films do not do that volume of business because their fans have an extraordinary sense of loyalty to their actors. Fan following is very strong — if there is a Kamal Haasan fan, then he will be a Kamal fan forever; Rajinikanth fan will be a Rajinikanth fan for life.”

He added on saying, ”We have piracy here; one should try indulging in piracy there, fan clubs wouldn’t allow it. Whether a politician or the underworld does it, they don’t give a dam*; they will fight it.”

Salman is currently busy in promoting his upcoming film ‘Tubelight’ which will be hitting the screens on June 23, in the festive season of Eid.

WHAAT! Shah Rukh Khan Has Women Bodyguards For THIS Reason

Shah Rukh Khan Now Has Female Bodyguards And You Need To Know Why!

The King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan always has romance and wit up his sleeve. At any time of the day and at any moment in an interview, one can never guess when SRK will come up with witty lines and it will surely make you smile, if not leave you in splits.

Being the king of romance comes with its own quirks. One is obviously a supremely large women fan-following. At the India Today Conclave 2017, the superstar spoke about the recent incident when his car ran over a journalist’s foot. In the same breath, he also spoke about the experience of being around fans who are eager to touch and greet him at public places.

Shah Rukh said that, “When people start throwing themselves at you, just make sure you always smell good, brush your teeth, have soft hair. I have a lot of ladies who like to smell me and grab me, so now I have lady bodyguards.”

Then SRK opened up about why now he has hired female body guards.

“I have lady bodyguards now, because it was getting very rude when men were pushing women and they were trying to protect. Women have lovely long nails and their love hurts. And when you come back home, you spend so much time explaining to your kids and wife that this was a fan. I have lady bodyguards now, to look after nail marks,” he said with his quick wit.

Amusing, right? SRK never fails to make you smile.

Professionally, he will be seen in Imtiaz Ali’s next with Anushka Sharma and Aanand L Rai’s film where he plays a dwarf.

Star Gold Acquires Jai Ho, Kick, Singham 2 And More

Star Gold Feature ImageStar GOLD, the Hindi Movie Channel from Star INDIA, has acquired the telecast rights of Jai Ho, Kick, Action Jackson and Singham 2.

Along with this, Star GOLD has also accrued about fifteen more titles for eleven years with a clause of unlimited runs across the network.

The other movies which are a part of the fresh (2014) deal are Bombay Velvet (Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar and Anushka Sharma), Bang Bang (Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif), Roy (Ranbir Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez and Arjun Rampal), Hamshakals (Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor and Bipasha Basu), Bobby Jasoos (Vidya Balan), Creature (Bipasha Basu and Imran Abbas Naqvi), Gang of Ghosts (Sharman Joshi and Mahi Gill), Traffic (Manoj Bajpayee, Jimmy Shergill, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee and Divya Dutta), Sonali Cable (Rhea Chakraborty and Ali Fazal), O Teri (Pulkit Samrat, Sarah-Jane Dias and Sara Loren), Bhaag Johnny (Kunal Khemu and Zoa Morani) and last but not the least Hawaa Hawaai (featuring Partho Gupte and Saqib Saleem).

The network had signed output deals with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn for Rs 5000 million (500 crore) and Rs 4000 million (400 crore) respectively, which gave the broadcaster the satellite rights for the movies released till 2017. With the new deal, all these movies will stay with the network for eleven years for unlimited runs.

The network had also bought a library of over five hundred movies from Viacom18 when the latter dropped its plan to launch a Hindi movie channel. With this, the channel has got enough movies to sustain its line up for this year.

Recently, movies such as Singham, Bodyguard, Ra.One, Bol Bachchan, Son of Sardaar, Housefull 2, Dabangg 2, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Chennai Express, R…Rajkumar, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ramaiya Vastavaiya have premiered on television with good numbers.

  • Salman Khan: The REAL Game Changer

Salman Khan: The REAL Game Changer

Jai Ho poster main coverThere is much being spoken about Salman Khan and his latest film Jai Ho. Some say that the film is a typical potboiler, some say it has nothing new to offer, some are of the view that the film will not be able to set records and some feel that Jai Ho may not turn out to be a milestone as expected.

From the past three days, January 24, 2014 to January 26, 2014, there has been a lot of debate about the monies that Jai Ho has raked in during the first three days, or if Jai Ho will enter the 200 crore club.

What we are going to tell you is something that no one has even bothered to pay heed to and have even conveniently ignored.

The reason why Jai Ho has been a slow starter and could not roar at the Box Office is the fact that with Jai Ho, Salman Khan has tried to actually change his game.

With Dabangg‘s release on September 10, 2010, Inspector Chulbul Pandey gave birth to a brand called Salman Khan.

What fallowed were films like Ready, Bodyguard, Dabangg 2 in which Brand Salman Khan was very similar to Inspector Chulbul Pandey. He was fun, he was riotous, he was cute, he was lovable and he could laugh at himself.

Salman even carried forward this image in Bigg Boss, (the reality show that he anchors), at all the awards functions and public appearances that he made. This demeanor became his second nature and everyone fell in love with it.

With Jai Ho, Salman has tried to be serious, very brooding and no-nonsense kind of person – something that the audience is talking time to digest. Salman fans have not been disappointed with his film, but simply talking time to adjust to this new Salman.

All said and done, it’s a given that the film shall enter the 100 crore club in the first week. With films like Abhay Deol‘s One By Two that releases on January 31, 2014, Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra’s Hasee Toh Phasee on Feburaty 07, 2104 and Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh starrer Gunday on February 14, 2014, Jai Ho will enjoy a good run at the Box Office.

  • Box Office: Salman Khan’s Jai Ho Fails To Beat Dhoom 3

Box Office: Salman Khan’s Jai Ho Fails To Beat Dhoom 3

Jai Ho poster 02Salman Khan’s Jai Ho has been a slow starter and failed to beat the record of Dhoom 3 on its opening day. Jai Ho is Salman Khan’s release after a long wait of more than a year. His last release was Dabbang 2 on December 21, 2012.

However, it seems the wait was not worth it. Jai Ho has managed to collect approximately Rs 170.4 million (17.04 crore) nett on day one, Friday 24, 2014. On the other hand, Dhoom 3 (Hindi version) had managed to collect collected Rs 334.2 million (33.4 crore) nett approximately on its opening day.

Jai Ho’s opening day collection is Salman’s lowest opening since Dabangg and is lower even compared to Chennai Express, Bodyguard and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Jai Ho was great at single screens but poor at multiplexes. It seems multiplex audiences are not in the mood for more masala movies and that is reflecting in the performance of Jai Ho.

Jai Ho, which released in around five thousand screens in the domestic market was one of the most awaited films of 2104. His last release was Dabbang 2 on December 21, 2012. Prior to that was Yash Raj Films Ek Tha Tiger where he was paired opposite Katrina Kaif and Kabir Khan directed the film.

The impact of Jai Ho‘s poor opening may affect Eros International way more than Sohail Khan. The latter in fact has already recovered the cost of production of the movie when he sold it to Eros.  The deal includes the all the rights of the movie including distribution, satellite, music and digital.

If one looks at day one figures of Jai Ho then its not that bad but there were more expectations from a Salman Khan movie and may face losses.

All said and done, now all hopes are now pinned on the collections on Saturday and Sunday, when maximum people are expected to watch the film. However, the golden figure of Rs 200 crore box office collections seems like a faraway dream for co-producers Sohail Khan and Eros International. We feel that the film shall enter the 100 crore club in the first week.

Jai Ho‘s run at the box office also depends on what kind of competition it faces from other films. Ready for releases are Abhay Deol‘s One By Two that releases on January 31, 2014, Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra’s Hasee Toh Phasee on Feburaty 07, 2104 and Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh starrer Gunday on February 14, 2014.

  • Dhoom 3 Box Office Breaks All Records

Dhoom 3 Box Office Breaks All Records

DHOOM3FIDhoom 3 has set the Box Office on fire and has set the record of being the highest earnings film ever in the history of Indian Cinema, leaving behind films like 3 Idiots, Bodyguard and Dabangg.

It has not only set this record at the domestic Box Office but has also picked up the same position in the worldwide business sector.

We are estimating a figure of about Rs 2627 million (262.7 crore) nett that the film has collected, so far which makes it an all time blockbuster.

The film directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya was released in about four thousand five hundred screens in India and about seven hundred fifty screens abroad on December 20, 2013.

The US-Canada and UAE-GCC circuits mostly contributed to the film’s earnings. The other overseas circuits included Australia and New Zealand.

Dhoom 3 has basically set an example of what a good planning can achieve. Yash Raj got together a perfect ensemble and the time of release of Dhoom 3 was so very perfect that it has a clear thirty-day run as there is no major release till January 24, 2014.

Also, with films like Dhoom 3 and Krrish 3, there is a strong brand association and a recall value to it, so pulling the initial crowds to the theatre is not too much of a task, sustaining the footprints is something one needs to look into. With the festive weekend and holidays, it’s not difficult for Dhoom 3 to achieve this.

If one remembers, Krrish 3 released on November 01, 2013 but then it could only manage a three-week clean run as on November 14, 2013 Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela had hit the theatres thus dividing as well as diverging the audience.

All said and done, we are now waiting for Dhoom 4. Keeping in with the tradition, it will either star Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar or Ajay Devgn.

    Well lets keep guessing!

  • IN PHOTOS: Salman Khan’s Bollywood Silver Jubilee!

IN PHOTOS: Salman Khan’s Bollywood Silver Jubilee!

    SALMAN23082013

MUMBAI: Salman Khan had an easy way into Bollywood. He’s, after all, the son of famous scriptwriter Salim Khan. But when he debuted in 1988 in ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’, no one thought he would make it far. After all, his voice was dubbed with someone else’s in his very first film.

But then came Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, and history, and a new actor, was born. In fact, Sooraj Barjatya has been a constant in Salman Khan’s 25 years in Bollywood. From ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ to ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ and ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ to the director’s next in 2015: they have forged a great partnership.

In fact, this romantic hero was Salman Khan’s first identification. The hit films in his early career came with these roles. Of course, he dabbled in comedy, like ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, and in action, like ‘Karan Arjun’. But the romantic tag remained well into the late nineties and early noughts.

With films like ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’, he bolstered his chocolate-boy roles. He also featured in perhaps the best films of his career in ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’. Towards this time, directors also realised that Salman Khan had immaculate comic timing. So David Dhawan was instrumental in casting him in ‘Judwaa’ and ‘Biwi No. 1’. Then there was his own brother Sohail Khan’s ‘Hello Brother’, which to some extent became the early template for his later larger-then-life action-comedy persona films.

If Salman Khan had captured audience’s attention by now, he’d also won awards. With ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, he’d won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut and was nominated for Best Actor too. But he won his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for an extended cameo in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ where he almost stole the show towards the end.

His films at the start of the noughts were not huge hits, but he hit back majorly with 2003’s ‘Tere Naam’. His hairstyle from the film – the famous long-hair middle-parting – became so famous that everyone would emulate it.

Then began the comedy era of Salman Khan. Be it ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ to ‘No Entry’ to ‘Partner’, Salman Khan showed his lighter side to the audience making them laugh as hard as possible.

In 2009, came ‘Wanted’ and with that started the over-the-top action and gravity-defying stunts. Salman Khan became the poster-boy for such films and has not stopped since. The most famous type is of course Chulbul Pandey in 2010’s ‘Dabangg’. But it looks like this larger-than-life persona will not stop as Salman Khan has ‘Jai ho’ and ‘Mental’ coming up in 2014. Maybe Sooraj Barjatya’s next film in 2015 will get Salman Khan back to earth.

Salman Khan is the quintessential Bollywood superhero. Action, comedy, romance, he can do all – in a way that very few can. His fans eagerly wait to see what else Salman Khan has in store for them from this jubilee till the next.

Cheers to Salman Khan’s 25 years in Bollywood. It’s been a fun time at the movies.

  • He’s Innocent: Salim Khan Defends Salman Khan

He’s Innocent: Salim Khan Defends Salman Khan

    SALMAN01082013

MUMBAI: There isn’t any mincing of words when it comes to speaking about Salman Khan. Salim Khan, his father, has come to the superstar’s defense. He reveals that Salman Khan is an ordinary citizen. He isn’t above the law, but is being treated unfairly – prosecuted for being a celebrity, one might say.

With the hit-and-run case being subjudice, and the hearing to start soon, he pleads that only law should decide the actor’s fate.

Salim Khan has come out emotionally defending his son and says that its time to speak up because Salman Khan has been misrepresented in many ways. Recalling the details of the fateful night, says Salim, “Hit-and-run has the implication of being callous and a coward. You become an insensitive person and a coward if you want to run away in such a situation. The car skidded and hit the footpath at 2.30 in the night and thereby, people who were sleeping on it. It is unfortunate that apparently, it was the first day they were sleeping on the footpath as it was the month of September when the monsoons had just got over. The accident happened 100 meters away from the house and the car was stuck there and was removed only in the morning. Coincidentally, Salman had a police constable (Ravinder Patil) with him at that time given to him for his protection.

“There was a crowd and there were stones being thrown at the car at which point, the police constable whose job it was to protect Salman, took him away from there and brought him home where his statements were recorded and then he was taken for the alcohol test. So where is the question of running away?

Salman Khan had been asked to give 20 lakhs when he got bail; his passport was confiscated and was asked to stay away from witnesses. Father Salim Khan says that this is proof that Salman has been tried as a normal citizen and not been given any concessions on account of his star status. Infact, no one has been asked to give so much money and only because it’s Salman Khan has the court been harsh, he further explains.

The trial is yet to begin. The verdict isn’t out yet. But Salman Khan seems to be on the path to mending relations and bettering friendships.

Has Salman Khan accepted the realities of life?

Here’s a glimpse of his numerous court appearances over the years…

  • Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ To Release On A Sunday

Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ To Release On A Sunday

    SALMAN!27072013

MUMBAI: With every Eid comes Salman Khan: this has been the case over the past couple of years. There was ‘Dabangg’ in 2010, ‘Bodyguard’ in 2011 and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ in 2012.

Unfortunately that partnership has been broken in 2013, with Salman Khan’s next film ‘Jai Ho’ (earlier titled ‘Mental’) being postponed to early next year. Shah Rukh Khan has taken up Eid this year with his next offering ‘Chennai Express’.

But the superstar will return to his usual spot in 2014, with his next film ‘Kick’. Kick is to be directed by Sajid Nadiadwala. As Eid falls on a Sunday next year, on 27 July, the team has decided to release the film on that very day.

A source says, “Sajid wants to make the most of the holiday. And if Eid falls on Monday, it will still work in the film’s favour.”

It’s not the first time, a film will not release on a Friday. Over the years, many films have released on other days to take advantage of factors like a public holiday or extended weekends. Just last year, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ released on a Wednesday, while ‘Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ released on a Tuesday.

This year too, the Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’ releases on a Thursday (15 August) while Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Krrish 3’ will release on a Monday (4 November, Diwali).

Let’s hope that Salman Khan’s lucky date with Eid proves successful for him again. Till then, his fans can wait for ‘Jai Ho’, directed by Sohail Khan, which releases on 24 January, 2014.

  • The Mysterious Case Of Salman Khan

The Mysterious Case Of Salman Khan

MUMBAI: It isn’t the first time Salman Khan has been spotted with mysterious women at promotions, airports and events. Whenever the actor is seen with unknown ladies, there are huge speculations on the actor’s personal life and his newfound love.

    SALMAN01072013

The actor seems to have a penchant of hanging out with foreign beauties. First it was his alleged linking to Bruna Abdullah. Claudia Ciesla, the beauty who made an appearance in a television reality show, where Salman Khan was the host, followed and then it was Hazel Keech who played Kareena Kapoor’s friend in ‘Bodyguard’.

And the latest addition is Romanian actor Lulia Vantur, who was spotted with Salman Khan at the Hyderabad airport.

Salman Khan made an attempt to keep this mystery woman away from the eyes of the media, and drove her separately in a car but not for too long. The media was quick enough to probe into Salman Khan’s ‘mysterious’ lady.

Is it the actor’s newfound love? There are still speculations.

Meanwhile, Salim Khan, Salman’s protective father says, “He is a grown man. I don’t interfere in his personal life and I don’t want to get into all this.”

Salman Khan is currently shooting for brother Sohail Khan’s ‘Mental’ at Hyderabad.

It looks like everyone is keen on seeing the big brother of the Khan family tie the knot soon or find his ladylove again. But Salman Khan is happy for now keeping audiences in surprise and speculation. As mysterious as it can get!

  • Salman Khan Fans In For Disappointment, This 2013

Salman Khan Fans In For Disappointment, This 2013

MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan who has been ruling at the ticketing windows with all of his recent releases, is going to break many hearts this year. The actor is, most likely, not going to make any appearance on the silver screen, 2013.

According to reports Salman Khan’s next film ‘Mental’, directed by his younger brother Sohail Khan is scheduled for mid-January 2014 release.

Shared a source closely associated to the film, “In keeping with the screenplay, it will take the Khans around 135 days to complete the shooting. There are five major action sequences including the high-octane climax, which takes place on a highway with Salman bringing all traffic to a halt. Most importantly, everything is planned bearing in mind Salman’s nerve trouble (Trigeminal Neuralgia). Sohail wants to ensure it doesn’t aggravate in any manner whatsoever.”

Director Sohail Khan though, didn’t confirm the news. He only stated, “I’ll come when I am ready.”

Since 2009, Salman Khan has been delivering one block buster hit after the other.  It started with ‘Wanted’. Then a series of – ‘Dabangg’ (2010), ‘Ready’ (2011), ‘Bodyguard’ (2011), ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012) and ‘Dabangg 2’ (2012) set the box office ablaze.

SPOTTED: Salman Khan On Sets Of ‘Mental’

    More photos
MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and his ‘Bigg Boss’ Season 6 co star Sana Khan were caught on the sets of their upcoming ‘Mental’.
Salman Khan was seen casually dressed in a navy blue T-Shirt from his own line, with the word ‘Hope’ printed on it. Sana wore a beautiful pink and green embroidered salwar kameez.
In a recent interview Sana shared how she landed this role in ‘Mental’ after ‘Bigg Boss 6’, and spoke warmly about the much loved ‘Dabangg’ Khan.
“I knew Salman would honour his word to launch me in Bollywood, I was trying not to be too excited before things started shaping up,” Sana had said.
‘Mental’ also features debutant Daisy Shah – who’s been an assistant to choreographer Ganesh Acharya in films like ‘Zameen’ (2003) and ‘Khakee’ (2004). Daisy Shah had earlier starred in the Kannada version of Salman’s 2011 hit film ‘Bodyguard’ opposite popular south star Jaggesh.
Daisy recently completed her 12 day schedule for ‘Mental’ at Dubai Wonderland.
Featuring Salman Khan, Daisy Shah, Sana Khan and Tabu, ‘Mental’ is a remake of a Telugu hit film ‘Stalin,’.  The film is directed and produced by younger brother Sohail Khan.
  • MENTAL: Sohail Khan Wants Rs 130 Crore For The Salman Khan Starrer?

MENTAL: Sohail Khan Wants Rs 130 Crore For The Salman Khan Starrer?

MUMBAI: There is no doubt that Salman Khan starrers garner a lot of attention right from the moment they’re announced. Salman Khan’s upcoming flick ‘Mental’ is produced by his brother Sohail Khan.

Although the film went on the floors just recently, the buzz around is that Sohail Khan is demanding a whopping sum of Rs 130 Crore for all India theatrical rights of ‘Mental’. Reportedly, Sohail has already been getting offers up to Rs 90 Crore for the film but given the ‘Dabangg’ star’s current dream-run, Sohail is in no mood to compromise.

Let’s take a look at the all India net Box Office Collections of  Salman Khan’s last 5 films –

‘Dabangg’ collected approximately Rs 145 Crore

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ made around Rs 198 Crore

‘Bodyguard’ collected around Rs 151 Crore

‘Ready’ collected approximately Rs 125 Crore, and

‘Dabangg – 2’ earned nearly Rs 150 Crore

But, whether this prompts someone to give into Sohail Khan’s demands for Rs 130 Crore for ‘Mental’ remains to be seen, not to mention the film has been in news several times for the delays and glitches that it’s been facing. Looks like Sohail Khan is facing a tough time in getting things done his way, but we’re sure everything will work out just fine, after all it’s a Salman Khan film!

The Khan Brothers are currently in Dubai, busy shooting for the film. ‘Mental’ starring Salman Khan and Karishma Kotak, is looking at a 2013 October release. This will be the first time in five years that a Salman Khan film won’t release during Eid!

  • Salman Khan’s ‘Mental’: Killing Two Birds With One Stone?

Salman Khan’s ‘Mental’: Killing Two Birds With One Stone?

DUBAI: Salman Khan has been setting the Box Office by storm every Eid for the past four years with his releases – ‘Dabangg’, ‘Wanted’, ‘Bodyguard’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. Unfortunately we hear that this year, we won’t be seeing the superstar on Eid!

Salman Khan’s eagerly awaited ‘Mental’ produced by brother Sohail Khan won’t be able to make the Eid deadline this year and will release on 2 October 2013. The reason being, the film saw a lot of shooting delays, not to mention the last minute swap of the leading ladies.

Sources tell us that Salman and Sohail, who are presently in Dubai shooting for the film don’t want to rush anything as the film has already seen a lot of delays and interruption.  They now want to work as smoothly and swiftly as possible. The Khan Brothers, therefore, have decided to release the film in October against Abhinav Kashyap’s upcoming Comedy ‘Besharam’ starring Ranbir Kapoor, Pallavi Sharda and Sainath Dukkipati.

Is this Salman’s way of getting back at both Abhinav and Ranbir? It is not a secret that Abhinav Kashyap and Salman Khan had a fall out when Abhinav denied Salman’s offer to direct ‘Dabangg 2’. And as far as Ranbir is concerned, he is rumoured to have been dating Salman’s ex Katrina Kaif.

Both ‘Mental’ and ‘Besharam’ are comedies and its going to be a tough competition this October. With Salman’s record of giving superhits everytime, Ranbir and Abhinav are going to have a tough time to maintain their numbers. But then again, ‘Besharam’ is backed by Abhinav Kashyap’s sharp direction and Ranbir’s unmatched talent.

Not to mention, we will be seeing Ranbir, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor on-screen together for the first time. So who wins the October battle this year remains to be seen!

Amidst all this, Shah Rukh Khan seems to have profited the most! He has been eying Eid for the release of ‘Chennai Express’ for a long time now. And thanks to Salman’s decision to release ‘Mental’ on 2 October Shah Rukh’s wish will mostly come true! ‘Chennai Express’ is a romantic comedy starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

  • Any Body Can Sing! Bollywood Comes A Full Circle

Any Body Can Sing! Bollywood Comes A Full Circle

A trend of playback by actors is on the rise. One may justly wonder whether this trend will kill or at least push back the playback industry. Will it?

In 1931, a revolution of a different kind swept through India. Adeshir Irani had directed the first talkie, ‘Alam Ara’. And the era of song and dance on screen had just only begun.

As the decades of the 40s and the 50s inched closer, resemblance to the formula Bollywood movie of today was more. Up until this point it was the very actors who sang
their own songs and this was the original way.

By the 1940s as technology developed, the concept of a playback voice came into being. This was the age of legendary singers like Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi and others who gave their voices to those superstars of the yesteryears.

It is amazing how Bollywood actors of today have come a full circle since then and a trend of playback by actors is on the rise.

The most remarkable examples that come to mind while talking of a singer-cum-actor are the legendary Kishor Kumar, Noor Jehan and Suraiyya.

Bollywood through the decades saw actors sporadically sing for their own films. The earliest examples in contemporary cinema would be Vyjayanthimala who sang beautifully  the hit Bol Raadha Bol from ‘Sangam’ and Amitabh Bachchan giving his voice for movies like ‘Lawaaris’, ‘Silsila’, ‘Mr. Natwarlal’ and the more modern-day ‘Baghban’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, ‘Bhootnath’, ‘Buddha Hoga Tera Baap’ , ‘Delhi 6’ and ‘Babul’ and more. In addition to this, Amitabh Bachchan has created a niche for himself even in the music world and has many music albums to his credit.

While father Amitabh had already established himself as someone who could sing brilliantly, son Abhishek Bachchan sang a rap song for ‘Bluffmaster’.

The three Khans, Aamir, Salman and Shahrukh could not have been left behind in the race and Aamir sang Bam Bam Bole for his directorial debut ‘Taare Zameen Par’ while Salman Khan lent his voice to ‘Bodyguard’. Meanwhile, Shahrukh recited a poem in his recent film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’.

Our Bollywood actresses are definitely of exceeding talent. In 2002, Madhuri Dixit, Chandramukhi, showcased a perfect amalgamation of her dancing and singing skills in ‘Devdas’ on Kaahe Chede.

Years before that, the gorgeous Sridevi crooned O Meri Chandni for her film ‘Chandni’. Juhi Chawla accompanied Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Bhootnath’ and Priyanka Chopra has released an international album that recognizes her as a singer of worth.

Priyanka Chopra is yet to give a musical Bollywood debut but has already sung playback for a Tamil movie she starred in.

This inclination of Bollywood actors towards playback continues to grow. The film ‘Rock On’ created a revolution in itself as Farhan Akhtar turned from direction to acting and also lent his raw fresh voice to the film. Along with Farhan, Abhay Deol and Hritik Roshan sang together Senorita from ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, an undoubted hit.

More actors who sang for their films were Ayushmann Khurrana and most recently Akshay Kumar for ‘Special 26’. How can we possibly forget Tamil actor Dhanush, currently preparing for his Bollywood debut, sang ‘Kolaveri Di’ that went viral.

One may justly wonder whether this trend will kill or at least push back the playback industry. I would say the playback singers will remain untouched and unharmed! As much fan following there is to actors, it is to musicians and singers.

Interestingly, this crossing over is not just one way. We have loads of singers who have taken an entry in to the world of the silver screen. We have Himesh Reshammiya, Mika and Hard Kaur who have starred in Bollywood movies.

The hit Pakistani musician Ali Zaffar has made a mark in Bollywood both as an exceptional singer and as an actor with his films like ‘London, Paris, New York’ and ‘Mere Brother ki Dulhan’.

Lately even the great female playback singer, Asha Bhosle, has come up with her film ‘Mai’…

It was a joyous surprise when such an actor turned singer, Ayushmann Khurrana, won the Filmfare award for the best male playback for Paani Daa from the film ‘Vicky Donor’. He won the award after being nominated along with other singers who are professionally into music; democracy indeed!

This crisscross has rather led to an amalgamation of talent from various ends with a healthy pool of diverse talent. This reinforces that everybody has hidden potential; and Anybody Can….Sing!

  • ‘Race For 100 Crores’ Is Bollywood’s Newest Mantra

‘Race For 100 Crores’ Is Bollywood’s Newest Mantra

Bollywood seems to be in a mad rush these days, running a very important race: the race to reach a 100 Crores.
Bollywood seems to be in a mad rush these days, running a very important race: the race to reach a 100 Crores.

Bollywood seems to be in a mad rush these days, running a very important race. No folks, we aren’t wildly speculating about some sporting event in B’town, but we are talking about the big race in Bollywood: the race to reach a 100 Crores, which our filmmakers are each trying their utmost best to win.

The race to 100 crores has heated up in the past two years or so, where we have seen big-ticket films scale all-time highs, in their quest to make the most money. We guess it all started with Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiot’’, which was one of the first films to enter the coveted ‘100 crore club’. The film naturally went on to do bigger business, even touching the obscenely till-then unheard of Box Office figures of 300+ crores throughout its lifetime.

Most filmmakers started vying to attain the sublimal heights of the magical number, and started directing their efforts to make what is now called a ‘100 Crore film’.

Since then, we have seen a slew of Masala entertainers such as ‘Ready’, ‘Bodyguard’, ‘Dabangg’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Housefull 2’, ‘Singham’, and many many other such films which have appealed to the audiences at large.

So much so, that we even have films like ‘Barfi!’ and ‘English Vinglish’, both considered somewhat experimental mainstream cinema, kissing the sublime heights of the 100 crore peak.

So what is it that makes a film touch 100 crores? Is there a special formula, that filmmakers employ, to ensure their films cross that special threshold and become elite members of the ‘100 crore club’?

Most filmmakers are seemingly stumped when posed that question. They claim to not know what will appease the extremely fickle audiences; they say they are unsure what will tickle the funny bone of the cine-goer, and have him reach into his wallet to spare Rs 100, 200 or 400 for a movie ticket. Will it be comedy, action, romance or drama which will appeal to the universal audiences (for the various films that made it to 100 crores are from several different genres)?

Whatever seems to be the formula filmmakers employ, it’s clearly working. Southern remakes are all the rage now in Bollywood, and filmmakers are going beside themselves with glee, when each new film touches a 100 crores. Because the success of one film spawns another slew of films in the same genre, which end up having a similarly happy fate at the box office.

As Salman Khan was among the first few people in Bollywood to quantify this new trend into words: “See, with each new film, the budgets are increasing, as the distribution is becoming more widespread. For instance, we are now seeing more prints being released, and more shows lined up for these films. So it is but natural that the profits start reflecting the increased numbers. Where a film does 100 crores today, next year another film might touch 200/ 300/ 400 crores. So it is very positive for the Industry as a whole to see this new trend of ‘100 crore films’.”
