MUMBAI: Hindustani classical music maestro and Bharat Ratna awardee Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passed away this morning (24 January, 2011) in Pune. He was 89-years old.
Joshi was hospitalised recently following old-age related ailments, including breathlessness.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed grief over the death of the legendary vocalist, saying it was a national loss. "I am sad to learn about the passing away of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. It is a national loss. Millions and millions of music lovers all over the world enjoyed and will continue to enjoy his musical genius," Singh said in a condolence message.
To mourn his death, the Karnataka Government declared a day’s mourning.
In 2008, Joshi received the Bharat Ratna award, which is India’s highest Civilian honour.
