MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt was released from Pune’s Yerawada Jail this morning. The actor, who had been sentenced to six years of imprisonment for possessing arms in the 1993 bomb blast case, has been granted an interim bail by the Supreme Court.
The apex court granted bail to all the six on the condition that they will report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Mumbai every week and will not abuse their grant of liberty and bail.
Dutt was accompanied back home by his brother in law and actor Kumar Gaurav, friend Yusuf Nalwala and his lawyer, Satish Maneshinde.
After the news of his release from Pune was splashed all across the media, security outside his house was tightened. At around 08:30 hrs (IST), when Dutt’s cavalcade finally reached there, there was considerable excitement with fans climbing up the boundary walls to catch a glimpse of the star.
Several of Dutt’s colleagues from the film fraternity were also present at the Santa Cruz airport to receive the actor.
Dutt’s close friends from the film fraternity seemed to have had a tough sleepless night. Sanjay Gupta, Bunty Walia and Apoorva Lakhia were waiting from 6 am early in the morning. The actor’s sisters, Priya and Namrata, who could not make to Pune too joined them at the airport. The sisters were seen rushing towards their brother as he stepped out of the car and Priya couldn’t holdback her tears as she hugged him. The actor however rushed to his nephew Siddharth and kissed him.
“In all humility, I thank all those who prayed for me during this period of my life. I thank all those who stood by me and my family and supported us so firmly. I intend spending this brief period while I’m on bail working on my case with my lawyers. I have full faith in the judicial system; I respect the law and will abide with it. I once again like to thank the film industry, all my colleagues and friends and above all, my fans for their support. I particularly thank my family for their unconditional and unending love and support,” Dutt said in a prepared statement.
“I also thank all my fans in Pune who stood outside the jail waiting for me, I’m sorry I could not meet you all but thank you for your prayers. I was overwhelmed by your love. I could hear you when I was inside the jail, and your love kept me strong,” he added.
Producer duo Abbas Mustan too paid a visit to the star. Later, Maanyata was also seen at Dutt’s residence.
