Madhuri Dixit to play the Indian counterpart of Nicole Kidman

MUMBAI: Madhuri Dixit is all set to get into the swirling space that Nicole Kidman had created. Remember Nicole Kidman shaking a leg and a lot more to the sound of Anu Malik’s Chamma chamma in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge?

Many critics the worldover had observed the striking thematic and mood resemblances between Moulin Rouge’s tale of love and betrayal as told in the song and dance form, and the notorious Bollywood formula.

Luhrmann has openly acknowledged his debt to Bollywood. Now it’s payback time. Bollywood’s leading choreographer turned filmmaker Remo D’Souza is all set to remake Luhrmann’s 2001 musical which had swept the world box-office to become one of the most successful on-screen musicals of all times.

The adaptation we hear, would be faithful in all details. Says a source close to the project, “Madhuri will play the desi counterpart of Nicole Kidman. There would be no difference in the characterization or plot. The treatment and content of the songs would be difference.Remo would turn the songs and dances around, make them a fusion of the desi and firangi .Remo thinks Madhuri can dance far better than Kidman.”

The role of Kidman’s lover played by Ewan McGregor in the original, would here be essayed by Prabhu Deva. Says our source, “Remo wants a co-star who can match Madhuri’s dance steps. Madhuri and Prabhu have done the iconic Que sera sera in Pukar together. They are perfectly co-ordinated for their roles.”

Kidman had warbled the songs in Moulin Rouge in her own voice. Remo is apparently in the mood to let Madhuri do all her singing, provided she finds the time to train for the songs. Madhuri has already sung some lines in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas.

The lavish project goes on the floors as soon as Remo finishes directing his current dance film ABCD in 3D.
