MUMBAI: There is yet another news about Ram Gopal Varma’s making of Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 classic Sholay. It’s learnt that the film is no longer called Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay, instead it will be called Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.
According to sources, the negotiations with the original title-holders of the film — the Sippys — have failed and now Varma has decided to rename his film. The change in name has been undertaken to stay away from controversies surrounding plagiarism allegations.
Not only that, even the names of the characters in the film have changed. Gabbar Singh’s name has been changed to Baban Singh, Basanti to Ghungroo, Radha to Devi, Soorma Bhopali to Rambhabhai, and Sambha to Tambhe. The big question that still remains unanswered is whether Varma would change the names of Jai and Veeru as well.
