Sony Pictures to release Roy’s Apna Asmaan

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Releasing of India will release Apna Asmaan, directed by ad-man turned filmmaker Kaushik Roy, on 7 September.

The film stars Irrfan Khan, Shobana, Rajat Kapoor and Anupam Kher. New find Dhruv Panjuani plays the role of Buddhi – Irrfan and Shobana’s teenage son. Apna Asmaan is inspired by a real life teenage artist named Orko.

Sony Pictures Releasing of India managing director Uday Singh says, “We are looking forward to releasing the movie on 7 September with approximately 60 prints, in major cities of India.”

Talking about the film director Kaushik Roy adds, “Apna Asmaan is about how far parents would you go to make their child a genius. In my film the child is intellectually handicapped. Driven by the social insecurities, the parents chase an unreal dream of seeing their son as a normal student who, like others, must become an engineer or doctor. Finally the parents discover a drug that can make their son a genius thus fulfilling their parent’s dreams.”

Roy is also working in the capacity of president – brand strategy and marketing communication with Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries. “However Reliance Industries is not involved with this feature film,” Roy clarifies.

The audio and home video rights of the film lie with HMV. The film is written and directed by Roy and co-produced by Umang Pahwa. Lesle Lewis has composed the music and Mehboob has penned lyrics.

The film was completed within 32 days and has been shot at real location in Mumbai. “The film’s budget including marketing and print is approximately Rs 35 million (Rs 3.5 crore),” informs Roy.

The movie recently won the German Star of India at the Stuttgart Film festival. Roy is also looking forward at taking the film to various other festivals in India and across the world. The film was screened at Cannes this year and Roy is currently in talks with an American based company to seal rights for the film theatrical rights in the US.
