UTV will host screenplay writing workshops

Mumbai: In January 2007 UTV will host a 10 day workshop and a two day seminar in India with Syd Field, who has been a script consultant to major US Studios like Disney, 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures.

The workshop will consist of updating classic storytelling conventions with a focus on the contemporary tools of the craft. He will focus on storytelling techniques, with the best of modern cinema, in order to help the aspiring or professional screenwriter to create, prepare, write, and rewrite his/her own screenplay.

Speaking on this initiative Ronnie Screwvala of UTV says, “The Indian film industry is at par if not better in the technical and visual aspect of film making. But script writing in India has not progressed in the same direction. For a country that produces the world’s largest number of films, this is a serious issue. We at UTV strongly believe that in the long run, we have to tell engrossing stories, which captures people’s imagination. For this, we need to cultivate skills so that great stories are created that move boundaries and touch people.”

Field has also taught at various academic institutes like Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkley and many noted Institutions. Some of Field’s former students include Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire) John Singleton (2 Fast 2 Furious, Four Brothers, Shaft), Randi Mayem Singer (Mrs. Doubtfire), Laura Esquival (Like Water For Chocolate), and Kevin Williamson (Scream, Scream 2& 3).
