MUMBAI: Ram Gopal Varma’s horror film Phoonk, which opened across India on 22 August, has grossed Rs 60 million (Rs 6 crores) in its opening weekend.
The movie was made on a budget of Rs 30 million (Rs 3 crores).
To celebrate the success of the film, Varma along with the cast and crew of the party threw a party today in Mumbai.
Speaking on the success of the film, Varma says, "It’s not easy to market a movie without the actors and by showing a crow in the publicity campaigns. I believe that the marketing activities that were spun around the movie played an important role in the opening of the film at the box office."
Additionally, buyoed by the response to the film, the makers have now announced a sequel to Phoonk. A contest has been weaved around the sequel wherein the movie’s producer Azam Khan said that the person who will provide a satisfying way forward to the storyline for the sequel will be rewarded with an amount of Rs 1 million (Rs 10 lakhs).
