BOX OFFICE: Akshay Kumar’s ‘Boss’ Fails Over 5-Day Weekend

MUMBAI: Unlike many other films, the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Boss’ a theoretical 5-day weekend, and considering it had all the elements of a typical masala blockbuster, it was expected to be a huge hit.

But alas! That was not to be.

On the first day, which was a public holiday, ‘Boss’ collected only Rs 110 million (Rs 11 crore) nett. Over the next two days, including the usual release day of Friday, its collections had dipped rapidly to collect only Rs 240 million (Rs 24 crore) nett over three days, which is less for a masala blockbuster type film which stars Akshay Kumar.

Saturday and Sunday would be the ultimate deal breaker though. ‘Boss’ had collected Rs 60 million (Rs 6 crore) nett on Friday, which reduced to Rs 56 million (Rs 5.6 crore) nett on Saturday.

Luckily, the collections got better on Sunday, due to the weekly holiday. ‘Boss’ earned Rs 70 million (Rs 7 crore) nett on Sunday. This takes the total five day ‘weekend collection’ to Rs 366 million (Rs 36.6 crore) nett.

Now that might seem like a huge number, and if it were any small film, we’d be praising its collections. But for a film that had all the commercial masala elements in place, like the party songs, interesting and well-done action sequences, the heroine in a bikini, wise-cracking dialogues and also Akshay Kumar – not to add his fight with the villain Ronit Roy – there can only be disappointment at the not-so-great collections.

Akshay Kumar is perhaps not the ‘Boss’ anymore.
