Box Office: De Dana Dan fares well in smaller centers

MUMBAI: The Eid weekend release De Dana Dan had a fairly reasonable opening with around 60 – 70% occupancy. The movie did a net business Rs 60 million (Rs 6 crore) in its opening day.

However, the Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif starrer has done better in smaller centers like Indore, Aurangabad, Latur, Gujurat and UP. Even though the movie is expected to do good business in the weekend, it remains to be seen how it sustains in the week as there have been mixed reports.

A spokesperson from a national multiplex chain said that while the occupancy in Latur, Indore and Aurangabad was 100%, the bigger centers did not open very well. Mumbai did a net business of Rs Rs 25 million (Rs 2.50 crore), whereas Delhi-UP notched approximately Rs 13.5 million (Rs 1.35 crore).

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Inox vice president programming and distribution Utpal Acharya said, "The opening has not been as expected with the occupancy being about 55-60%. Not many people have liked the film. On the other hand, 2012 is still going strong followed by Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani."

Cinemax India senior vice president Devang Sampat feels that being a comedy genre, the film’s opening has been reasonably good enough and the weekend should do good business. He said, "I feel the first week will do good business with good response from smaller centers like Gujarat and UP. However, there are mixed reviews from Mumbai."

Fun Cinemas chief operating officer Vishal Kapur added, "Even though the reviews of the film have not been that encouraging, the opening occupancy has been almost 70% and even through the week we are expecting an occupancy of around 60%. The weekends will be strong, though the viewers are not happy about the film."

Directed by Priyadarshan, De Dana Dan stars Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Neha Dhupia, Sameera Reddy and Archana Puran Singh among others.
