[tps_footer]Bollywood is offering two films this weekend, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Dilwale’, out of which the former might have a tough road ahead. Other than the main obvious reason being its clash with ‘Dilwale’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ also faces difficulties like having a director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The reason being, Bhansali’s films tend to have odd opening occupancy ratios throughout the country and other than ‘Devdas’, all of his films have had mediocre openings. The highest opening was for ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ which was due to Salman Khan.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali films and their opening ratios are as follows – ‘Khamoshi’ – 38.02%, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ – 46.86%, ‘Devdas’ – 31.27%, ‘Black’ – 41.45%, ‘Saawariya’ – 44.92%, ‘Guzaarish’ – 40.16% and the recent film ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram – Leela’ – 43.62%. Looking at these occupancy rates, it seems like ‘Bajirao Mastani’ will also have similar occupancy rate of somewhere between 40-50%, that too if ‘Dilwale’ doesn’t prove to give a bigger blow than expected. The only way ‘Bajirao Mastani’ can sustain the competition is if it gets at least 50% business that it can share with ‘Dilwale’.
Rohit Shetty films work wonders in Maharashtra and Gujarat areas which is another threat to ‘Bajirao Mastani’, as the film can only hope to perform its best at these two regions. The film being based on Maratha culture, it is less likely to cause a stir in the Northern regions of Delhi and UP. Especially UP side which has rarely ever responded well to Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies other than ‘Devdas’. Considering the large scale at which the film has been made, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ cannot afford to have occupancy rates like previous SLB films.

However due to the clash between these two films, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ has got lot of word of mouth and publicity, which it otherwise wouldn’t have received if it released alone. That should be one factor to draw the audience towards the screens booked by the film. December 18 will decide the fate of ‘Bajirao Mastani’ starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra as it clashes with Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Dilwale’.[/tps_footer]
