Eros to expand home video market with OSO

MUMBAI: Eros International is looking to penetrate into newer home video markets across the world with the release of its blockbuster movie Om Shanti Om starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

While the exact number of units to be sold has not been disclosed, Eros is hoping to enter at least 10 new home video markets. Speaking exclusively to Businessofcinema.com, Eros International executive vice president business development Marcus Stuart says, “Places such as Brazil, Russia, Argentina and many more will open up with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Om Shanti Om. This movie has been at number one position at the international box office in all territories except America. We have the movie’s record breaking box office figures to support the marketing.”

What’s more, Eros is very bullish on the success of Om Shanti Om home video. Stuart informs, “The worldwide home video sales (barring India) may account for as much as 20 per cent of the total overseas revenues. The US market will contribute profusely towards this.”

The movie will release on a two-disc DVD. The company is not looking at pricing the discs at a very high rate. It will be priced reasonably to compete with the pirates.

After the new home video markets open up with Om Shanti Om, Eros will then roll out their other movies like Partner, Heyy Babyy, Eklavya, Cheeni Kum, Gandhi My Father, Provoked etc, which it distributed in 2007. “We will take special care to not let these new markets fill with sub-standard content. Unfortunately when Germany home video market opened it got flooded with poor content and the quality fell drastically. Currently we are trying and rebuilding that market as well, with quality content,” adds Stuart.

Om Shanti Om is also going to be the opening film at the Berlin Film Festival, which will be held from 7 to 17 February 2008.
