5 Facts About Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi

His take on our Father of the nation was hugely applauded worldwide. It won eight Oscars including Best Actor, Best Director and Best Costume Designer which went to Bhanu Athaiya. Here are some of the lesser known facts about Attenborough’s one of the masterpieces.

  1. A big premiere of the film was held in Odeon Leicestar Square in London which was attended by Prince Charles and his then wife Diana on December 2, 1982
  2. It took Richard Attenborough 18 years to make the film. The film was facilitated by Motilal Kothari, a civil servant working with Indian High Commission met with Richard and requested him to make a film on Gandhi. The director had read Louis Fischer’s biography on Gandhi and agreed to make the film.
  3. The co-producer of the film Rani Dube requested the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi to spare $10 million from NFDC Fund for the film since it was falling short of money.
  4. It took six months for the film to complete and also made it to Guniess Book Of World Records for employing 3 lakh extras.
  5. Ben Kingsley who played Gandhi in the film has Indian origins. He is a son of a Gujarati father and was earlier named Krishna Pandit Bhanji.
