The first official trailer of the film which received a standing ovation at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival is finally here and it reveals more than just a clear picture of Hollywood stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. While we have come across trailers of films inspired or based on the modern era, the trailer of film Carol, which is set in 1950, comes out as a fresh air.
As the trailer starts, we are introduced to the two main leading ladies of director Todd Haynes’ Carol. The trailer provides us an extended look of the two characters. In Carol, Cate Blanchett will be seen playing the role of an older woman named Carol, who is a wealthy married socialite, whereas Rooney Mara plays the role of Therese Belivet, a 19-year old department store assistant.
As soon as the trailer starts, we witness a sensual heat surrounding Cate’s character Carol and Rooney’s character Therese. Carol is set against a glamorous and elegant backdrop of 1950s New York that depicts the romance between a beautiful married woman and a pretty department store worker. In the film, Carol risks everything as she falls in love with Therese. In the trailer, we see the tension between the two as their secret affair starts to blossom. We see them stealing glances and innocently pulling each other closer. It all starts after Blanchett and Mara meet over dinner to to know each other over better. Later in the trailer we see Mara helping Blanchett along with her children to buy a Christmas tree.
Carol’s trailer also features actor Kyle Chandler, who most probably plays Blanchett’s husband in the film. After Carol’s husband finds out about her affair with Rooney’s character, he threatens to take away their children. Soon after Carol is separated from her husband, she embarks on a road trip with Therese. The film will take us through the complicated secret love affair between two women during the time when homosexuality was a societal taboo. The film is set in 1950s, the era when American Psychiatric Association declared homosexuality as a “sociopathic personality disturbance”.
At Cannes Film Festival 2015, Rooney bagged the Best Actress Award for her role in Carol. The film is also considered as a strong contender for the Oscar Awards. With beautiful shots and shy glances in the trailer between two beautiful ladies, the trailer tells us a smooth story while “My Foolish Heart” plays in the background. On October 14, the film will be screened at the BFI London Film Festival’s American Express Gala. The drama film Carol is all set to hit the theatres in USA on November 27.
