Emma Watson, known best as Hermione in the Harry Potter series, has been cast as the new Belle in the live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, scheduled to hit the floors in the later half of 2015. Disney announced this on January 26, 2015, and a simultaneous confirmation came from the 24-year-old actor via a facebook post, which declares her excitement towards associating with the project.
The film will be directed by Bill Condon, the director of Gods and Monsters, and the Twilight films. The script is written by Stephen Chbosky, who directed the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Disney is yet to tell us who will be playing the other major roles of Gaston and the Beast.
Watson is also an ambassador for UN Women, and is working with United Nations through this group to end gender inequality. It will hence be interesting to watch out how she plays the role of Belle and reacts to Gaston, a character who is known to be insensitive, uncultured and sexist.
Beauty and the Beast was made into a film for the first time in 1991, and it was the first animated feature to be nominated for the best picture in Oscar.
