Milarepa picked for 22nd Napa Sonoma Film Festival 2008

Mumbai: The Tibetan language feature film Milarepa: Magician, Murderer, Saint has been selected for the 22nd Napa Sonoma Wine Country Film Festival, 23 July – 3 August.

Milarepa recently made its international premiere at the Marché du Film in Cannes. The saga of the real-life eleventh century mystic Milarepa, it is the timeless story of Tibet’s greatest yogi and spiritual warrior, a classic tale of revenge and redemption directed by Neten Chokling.

The prestigious Napa Sonoma Festival, declared one of the top film festivals in the US by USA Today, will be held in California’s wine country valleys  "Milarepa is a magnificent adventure into the world of a poet-sage of mythic proportions," said non profit festival’s director and founder Stephen Ashton. "The director is a Tibetan lama whose knowledge and passion are remarkably apparent."

Long before he was a Tibetan spiritual icon, the young Milarepa wrestled with betrayal, battled masters of black magic, destroyed a village, confronted demons and ultimately his own conscience, in a tale of awakening that has inspired millions for over a thousand years. It is also a strikingly beautifully filmed action picture.

Praised by The Washington Post, The LA Times, Variety, Screen International, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and The New York Sun, Milarepa is center stage in view of world politics concerning Tibet. Milarepa offers a provocative parallel to the cycle of violence and retribution consuming the world today while also holding out hope for constructive alternatives.
