Pirates find treasure at the box office

Mumbai: Walt Disney Picture’s much awaited Johnny Depp starrer adventure epic Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest has gone on a record breaking looting spree at the box office the world over. Released on July 7, the film managed to shatter all previous first three day records apart from breaking many other records. It went on to gross a record $ 132 million in its first three days breaking the record previously held by Sony Pictures’ Spiderman that had opened to $ 114.8 million.


Among other benchmarks, Pirates fetched the biggest opening weekend in Hollywood history. It got the biggest opening day with a gross of $55.5 million. It managed to surpass the four day opening weekend record holders – X Men: The Last Stand and Spiderman 2 both of which had grossed $122.9 million and $ 115.8 respectively. On a looting spree the pirates also managed to cross the $100 million mark in just two days. If this wasn’t enough, the film also got Disney its biggest opening surpassing, The Incredibles that had fetched $70.5 million in its first three days.


Sony Pictures is distributing the film in India. Vikramjit Roy, PR & Acquisitions, Sony Pictures sounds upbeat about the film. He says, “After breaking all records in US and UK, we are looking forward to the film doing very good business in India as well. I am sure Indian audiences from all age group are certainly looking forward to it. There is already a definite buzz about the film because it promises a dose of wholesome entertainment and a fun filled adventure ride. This film is definitely better than its part 1 and will do better than it. Many new characters have also been introduced and I am confident they will appeal to all. Sony Pictures is planning to release the film in india with 100 plus prints including the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions.”


Apart from the US, the film managed to have record openings in the UK ($25 million), South Korea ($9 million) and in Australia ($8.2 million).


The cast and crew of the sequel to the 2003 film, Pirates of The Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl includes Johhny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. The character of Captain Jack Sparrow played by Depp in the first part is already a rage with the audiences world over. It had even got the talented actor an Oscar nomination.


The part one had done very good business in India when released in 2004. The sequel lands on Indian shores on 21 st July.
