MUMBAI: Biopics are the current flavour of Bollywood, especially those of sportspeople. First, it was the athlete turned dacoit Paan Singh Tomar in ‘Paan Sing Tomar’, and now it is athlete Milkha Singh in ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. Boxer Mary Kom will also be portrayed by Priyanka Chopra in the upcoming Mary Kom.
And now it looks like it is cricket’s turn. But it isn’t the most famous Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. In fact the cricketer in question is former captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Producer Ekta Kapoor has taken it upon herself to bring his life’s story to the big screen.
The now 50 year old former cricketer is currently a Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh. But once upon a time, he was a famous cricketer and one of India’s most accomplished ODI batsman. His cricketing fable came to an end when his name came up in the match-fixing controversy in 2000.
A source said, “Till the time we don’t formalise things we would not like to say anything at the moment,” without confirming or denying the news.
Reportedly though, Ekta Kapoor has signed a contract with Mohammad Azharuddin to acquire his life’s rights for the biopic.
If this goes through, who do you think would be the right choice to play the flamboyant cricketer’s role? How about Emraan Hashmi or Abhishek Bachchan? We’d pay to watch them hit the ball out of the stadium.
