MUMBAI: Yash Raj Films’ Badmaash Company has done a net business of approximately Rs 130 million (Rs 13 crore) in its opening weekend in India. The movie is directed by Parmeet Sethi and stars Shahid Kapur, Anushka Sharma and Vir Das.
How the movie fares along the week will be crucial. However, a point to be noted here is that the release of the next big movie – Kites – is still two weeks away. Lined up for release this week are two small films – Bumm Bumm Bole and Admissions Open.
Additionally, the previous week’s release Housefull has done a net business of approximately Rs 85 million (Rs 8.50 crore) in its second weekend in India. With this, the movie’s net business for 10 days stands at Rs 540 million (Rs 54 crore). Housefull is directed by Sajid Khan and stars Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, Riteish Deshmukh, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan, Boman Irani and Randhir Kapoor amongst others.
Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, PVR Cinemas programming head Prakhar Joshi said, "As compared to last week, the occupancy of Housefull has gone down. The occupancy over this weekend was around 40% and the movie saw net collections of around Rs 90 lakhs across our properties. Badmaash Company has done well over the weekend with around 60 -65% occupancy and around Rs 1.5 crores net collections. On the other hand, Iron Man 2 has done extremely well, especially the English version with an occupancy of around 60 -70 and Rs 70 lakhs net collection. It’s A Wonderful Afterlife did not do as well as expected, the occupancy was around 40% and about Rs 20 lakhs net collections. The weekend has been good and we are very happy with the weekend collections on the whole."
Cinemax India SVP Devang Sampat added, "Housefull has done well in the B and C centers with around 40% occupancy. Badmaash Company and Iron Man 2 saw occupancy of around 60% each. Unfortunately, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife did not do very well with around 30% occupancy. Badmaash Company would have been even better had it not been for the cricket match but now that India is out of the semi final, the second week of Badmaash Company should do better."
