Shifting Gears: Viacom18 Dumps ‘Bombay Velvet’

Anurag Kashyap’s ambitious venture ‘Bombay Velvet’ runs into trouble as producers Viacom18 back out. Fox Star Studios to produce the film which stars Ranbir Kapoor.

MUMBAI: Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming film ‘Bombay Velvet’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma has run into trouble, as producers Viacom18 Motion Pictures have had a fallout with the director.

‘Bombay Velvet’ was to be jointly produced by Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, which has recently produced hit films like ‘Special 26’ and ‘Bombay Talkies’.

The trouble began when a question over the film’s extravagant budget came up and Viacom18 raised questions over Anurag Kashyap’s demand to construct a set to depict the city of Mumbai, as seen in the early 1940’s. Also other issues regarding profit sharing resulted in the fallout.

Fox Star Studios and Anurag Kashyap will now produce ‘Bombay Velvet’. Anurag Kashyap is working on a trilogy about the city of Mumbai and ‘Bombay Velvet’ is the first film to be a part of it.

The film discusses how the city became a Metropolis and has a story set against the backdrop of love, greed and violence.

With Viacom18 Motion Pictures out and Fox Star Studios taking control over the project, it is expected that ‘Bombay Velvet’ shall go on floors as planned in July this year.

What seems more interesting is that Anurag Kashyap’s demand to create a set of Mumbai has been approved by the producers and apparently Mumbai city is being recreated in Sri Lanka.

With this ambitious venture, it is to be seen if Anurag Kashyap is able to create the magic of the city just as he does with his stories.
